This past week in English, we were handed packets on comedy. The packets contained info about all kinds of comedy, the levels of comedy, and the different techniques that comedy uses. A few days after we were handed the packets, we watched Galaxy Quest, the 1999 science fiction parody comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell. I thought this movie was pretty funny, with all the random screaming and panicking done by Sam Rockwell.
Now, I’m sitting here trying to connect Galaxy Quest and I thought of it. Tim Allen! Tim Allen has starred in various movies, and one of them is Toy Story! Toy Story, the movie I’m sure everyone has heard of, stars Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear (aka “To Infinity…And Beyond!”). Now, Toy Story was not one of my favorite movies as a kid, but now, when I rewatch these old movies, I realize that some of them actually have funny double meanings to some of the stuff they say in the movie! I believe that Toy Story uses a Farce kind a comedy, designed to provoke belly laughs and also Verbal Irony and Insults, making fun of others without being mean.
When Buzz “flies” and wows all the old toys, there’s Woody standing there saying “This isn’t flying, this is falling with style!” Or when Rex is panicking about toys and says “What if Andy gets another dinosaur? A mean one? I just don’t think I can take that kind of rejection!” Toy Story has lots of funny things said and done in it, and if you can’t remember some of them, take a day off and just rewatch the old Disney movies and relax a bit.
